the other side of Tim Tebow

Gatorsports.com published this article about Tim Tebow after he won this year's Heisman:

Thanks to the Heisman, the other side of Tebow has started to emerge on a national scale, too. The family guy. The young man who embraces missionary work.

countdown to Gators vs Michigan in the Capital One Bowl

We are counting down the days to the New Year's Day Capital One Bowl game in Orlando when the Florida Gators play the Michigan Wolverines. This link to GameTrax at foxsports.com shows how many days, hours, etc. until game time Tuesday at 1:oo pm. Michigan has a new coach just in time for the game, so I think this will be a good match up.

Gator basketball - regular season begins today

I am one who thinks that college basketball season begins too soon. I am still trying to figure out how the Gator football team is going to make it back to the SEC championship game. And then they start basketball season! Florida begins its season today against North Dakota State with an all-new starting five.

Read the game preview at gatorsports.com:
Florida will begin a new season tonight against North Dakota State in the Blue Ribbon Challenge with five new starters and many questions.

the ol' ball coach vs the new ball coach

I still find it strange rooting against the "ol' ball coach" Steve Spurrier after so many years of cheering for him at Florida. He won the Heisman Trophy as quarterback of the Gators back in the 1960's. After playing in the NFL for a few years, he eventually made his way back to Florida to coach the Gators in the 1990's. Since then, he left Florida to coach in the NFL and is now back coaching college ball. And I still find myself cheering him on. But not this week! The Gators travel to South Carolina to play tonight at 7:45 pm.

Espn.com reviews the game:

Meyer will always have Spurrier's Florida legacy to deal with, but the two meetings so far between the Gators and their old coach have had championship implications.

great game to watch, hard game to lose

Coach Urban Meyer pretty much summed it up for the Gator nation, "it was a great game to watch, a great game to play, but a hard game to lose."

I enjoyed reading Mike Bianci when he was sports writer for the Jacksonville Florida Times-Union. I found his thoughts about the game online as he is currently the sports writer for the Orlando Sun-Sentinel: Dogs show bark is a bad as bite

Another writer said it this way, Georgia gets a rare victory against Gators, as Florida had won all but two of the last 18 games.

Finally, I agree with the writer of this article that there are lots of Gators to shoulder the blame for this loss. Urban Meyer summed it up in one word, "Awful."

As we always like to say, just wait until next year!

Florida-Georgia game preview from CBS

Florida-Georgia week

The big game of the year is almost here. I think it is officially called the Georgia-Florida game this year. I know I will miss the atmosphere of the game in Jacksonville this year. Even though we only went to a couple of FL-GA games - and that was to work concessions and earn money for the school - I still miss the anticipation of the game. No one seems to talk about it up here in Georgia. Florida quarterback Tim Tebow is making the news this week, as he is now at the top of most everyone's list for the Heisman Trophy. After the Kentucky game was over, Tebow was left with a bruised right shoulder. Since he is a left-handed thrower, it should not be a problem this week. AJC.com has a nice webpage for the Georgia-Florida game. Also, you can read the preview of the game at CBS.com - the game will be televised on CBS this Saturday at 3:30 pm from Jacksonville, Florida.

Gators take control

After a week with no game, the Gators took control of their future by winning against a solid Kentucky team today. What made it even more special was the fact that Kentucky beat LSU last week, which was the week after LSU beat the Gators. This shows how much parity there is in the SEC. The Gators are in the "driver's seat" to play for the SEC Championship game now, especially since they lost to two teams from the SEC West division. To be the SEC East champs, they still need to beat Georgia next week and South Carolina later in the season.
Final Score: Florida 45, Kentucky 37

Gators loss hard to take

Like the headline below implies, had the Gators won the game Saturday night at LSU, they would have moved up the polls, maybe close to #1. This loss was pretty hard to swallow, but they will have to pick up the pieces and move on. There is much more football to be played. I was glad to hear the local ESPN radio broadcasters complaining about the fans and their bad language at the LSU game. I sure hope our Gator fans have more class than the Tiger fans. It seems they were making cheers out of bad, vulgar taunts. There are too many kids in the stands, not to mention the women, to have to hear that during a game. Of course, most of it was chants about Tim Tebow. Tebow may not be the best quarterback to ever play at Florida, but he is on his way to becoming a legend. Not bad for a guy who was home-schooled. He also has a strong Christian testimony, so maybe that is what ticked the LSU fans off. Another article below explains why he pretended to use a cell phone after his touchdown run.

The 1 that got away
Urban Meyer described last week's heartbreaking loss to Auburn as a full-frontal body blow.

UF's Tebow receives threatening calls
On Tuesday, Florida's quarterback downplayed receiving hundreds of threatening messages left on his cell phone last week, presumably from LSU fans.

Gators lose to Auburn again

Can you believe it? Yes, Auburn did it again, as one paper summed it up "Deja Blue" and another headline read "Auburned again!" Catchy headlines but they don't make us Gator fans feel any better. The Gator nation was stunned when Auburn kicked a field goal to win with just 3 seconds left in the game. Of course, we could not be too surprised after the way the team played during the first half of the game. Too many penalties hurt our chances and there was no "swarming Gator defense" during that half. I wonder what Coach Meyer said to the guys during halftime! It was great to see the "real" Gator team come out and play in the second half, rally from being down 17-03 and tie the game in the closing minutes of the fourth quarter. We can all agree on one thing though, it was one exciting game of football!

Gators play Tigers in the Swamp

You remember that Auburn game last year, right? The one loss that almost knocked the Gators out of contention for the SEC and the National championship? Last year that game took place in Alabama, in mid-October. This year it is back in the Swamp, and it's pay-back time!

Tebow takes over

This was by far the closest and most intense game of the year so far! (Please don't make me nervous like that, it's bad for the heart!) The Ole Miss Rebels came on strong and they were within 3 points of a tie (27-24) in the 4th quarter. With another field goal to make the score 30-24, the Gator defense was able to stop the Rebels on their final possession. Going for it on 4th down, the Rebels came up a few yards short of a 1st down and the Gator offense took over as the fourth quarter winded down. Quarterback Tim Tebow just ran the ball over and over as the clock wound down. He took a knee with about 40 seconds to go and the game was over.

It’s not often the Florida Gators venture into the state

The fifth-ranked Gator football team improved to 3-0 after defeating conference rival Tennessee 59-20 in front of 90,707 at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium in the conference opener for both teams. read more at gatorzone.com

Gator headlines

The biggest game of the season is usually against the Tennessee Volunteers and I think this year is no exception. We know the Gators played the first two games against what we would call easier opponents and this is the first "test" of the year. The SEC regular season begins today for the Gators. The game is at the Swamp and will be on CBS game of the week at 3:30 pm today.

One of the names you heard a lot during last week's game was Kestahn (key-ston) Moore. Gatorzone (University of Florida website) posted this article on Moore: Stepping Up and Breaking Through

You can read the ESPN preview of the game at this link to Shaky Vols defense faces challenge against Florida offense. Now that sums the game up in one headline!

Florida Gators 59, Troy Trojans 31

The Gators win tonight, but it wasn't a blowout. Give the Troy Trojans credit for playing tough as they scored almost 31 unanswered points in the second half. Things were a little shaky for the Gators in the 2nd half. After scoring 7 touchdowns in the first half, the Gators struggled a bit to keep their offense going in the 3rd quarter. Tim Tebow finally took the ball and ran with it. Near the end of the game he had 14 carries alone. It was a good game and the Gators have a week now to get ready for SEC play, starting with Tennessee next Saturday afternoon . . . Oh My! By the way it was a nice change listening to the radio voice of the Gators play by play via the internet. I think he said "Oh, My!" about 15 times.

Tebow's turn to lead dream team

This headline posted on gatorsports.com (the re-designed website for the Gators provided by the Gainesville Sun newspaper) caught my eye:

It's Tim Tebow's Turn to lead his dream team.

The article gives some insight into the Tebow family and includes some advice for Tebow from former QB Danny Wuerffel (see excerpts below)

“It's going to be exciting,” Pam Tebow said. “A mother's view is a little different. I'm going to love him whether he throws an interception or a touchdown.”

Wuerffel also said he'd advise Tebow to focus on what is important. And third, “When you have a heart for people like he does and I do, you have to learn that 'no' is not a bad word

Gators blowout WKU

Even though the game ended with about 9 mins to go because of the weather - rain & lightning - it was really over by half-time. Western Kentucky was just no match for the Gators, and the Gators played like they had just "picked up where they left off." One notable interview during the telecast was with former Gator QB Shane Matthews (early 1990's) who said he was impressed with the way Tebow played today, showing more maturity as the QB.
